Position Description

Health is a lot more than just health care service.  People create health in their everyday lives; where they live, work and play.  Health is a shared responsibility that includes caring for yourself, your family and your community.  Together with others groups, the Board supports many different community activities that aim to improve health.

Under the Health Authorities Act, Bill No. 34, effective 01 January 2001, Community Health Board responsibilities are to:

  • Develop a community health plan for each fiscal year (April to March) and provide it to the Board.
  • Construct community profiles
  • Prepare an inventory of community based health services delivered in the community
  • Support the implementation of appropriate sections of the community health plan
  • Manage or assist with community development grants
  • Foster community development
  • Provide advice and assistance to the District

The CHB member is accountable to:

  • The community served by the CHB
  • The other members of the CHB
  • To the Board

  Evaluation:

  • Board members should individually and collectively evaluate their performance at least once a year prior to the annual general meeting.

  Duties:

  • Implement appropriate sections of the community health plan.
  • Actively participate in the meetings and affairs of the CHB.
  • Maintain a positive and collaborative working relationship within the board and with other organizations and groups.
  • Work with groups, organizations and individuals in the community to promote health and wellness.

  Qualifications:

  • Must be a resident of the area the CHB serves.
  • Commitment to time necessary for the three year CHB term.
  • Demographic diversity of the area, i.e., geography, gender, age, ethnicity, socio economic status.

  Demonstrate:

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Leadership potential and an active interest in the community
  • Knowledge of health issues and/or a willingness to learn
  • A willingness to accept the responsibility and accountability of being a member of the board
  • The ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Capacity to look at all sides of an issue and render wise decisions; able to focus on the “big picture.”
